Precipitated barium sulfate is a white precipitate generated by the reaction of barium ions and sulfate ions in solution. It is stable in nature and almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, but soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It has the advantages of strong chemical inertness, good stability, acid and alkali resistance, moderate hardness, high specific gravity and good whiteness.

 

 

01 Basic Information

The precipitated barium sulfate is a white amorphous powder with a relative density of 4.50(15 ℃) and a melting point of 1 580 ℃. Due to the high refractive index (1.63~1.65), the color is white and has a certain hiding power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It is easy to make mixed crystal with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate or metal nitrate. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperature. It is an important basic chemical raw material, the main purpose: used as paint, coating, ink, plastic, rubber and battery raw material or filler; printing paper and copper plate paper surface coating agent; textile industry with sizing agent; glass products as a clarifying agent, can play the role of defoaming and increase gloss. It can also be used as a protective wall material for radiation protection, and is also used in porcelain, enamel and dye industries. It is also a raw material for manufacturing other barium salts.

02 Purpose

Widely used in various coatings, plastics, rubber, paint, ink, insulating tape, ceramics, batteries, enamel and other industries. Can be used for acid-resistant rubber products and general products. It can also be used as a surface coating agent, sizing agent, weighting agent, clarifying agent, etc. It is the raw material for manufacturing other barium salts-powder coating, paint, marine primer, ordnance equipment paint, automobile paint, latex paint, interior and exterior wall architectural coating, which can improve the product light resistance, weather resistance, chemical and electrochemical corrosion resistance and product decoration effect, and enhance the impact strength of the coating. The inorganic industry is used as a raw material for the manufacture of other barium salts such as barium hydroxide, barium carbonate, barium chloride, etc. The wood industry produces wood-grain printing plates for primting and modulating printing paints. In organic synthesis, it is used as green pigment and lake to produce body filler.

03 Preparation

How to produce precipitated barium sulfate and barium ions will generate barium carbonate precipitation, there is a balance of barium ions and carbonate in water, if there is barium sulfate precipitation in water, there will also be a balance of sulfate and barium ions. The two equilibria interact, although barium sulfate is less soluble than barium carbonate.

However, due to the precipitation of barium carbonate generated by carbonate and barium ions, the equilibrium of precipitation and dissolution of barium sulfate will move and part of barium sulfate will be re-dissolved in water, thus the sulfate cannot be removed completely. Therefore, the barium sulfate must be filtered out before sodium carbonate can be added. The barium sulfide solution is mixed with the mirabilite solution after calcium and magnesium removal, and the reaction is carried out at 80 ℃ to generate precipitate, after suction filtration, water washing and acid washing, the pH value is adjusted to 5-6, then filtered, dried and crushed. Barium yellow brine can also be used to react with Glauber's salt solution to prepare precipitated barium sulfate.
