Barium sulfate has the advantages of strong chemical inertness, good stability, acid and alkali resistance, moderate hardness, high specific gravity, high whiteness, and ability to absorb harmful rays. It is a material with environmental protection function. High purity nano barium sulfate can be used not only for ordinary barium sulfate, but also for other special purposes. For example, it is widely used in industrial sectors, such as coatings, paper, rubber, ink, plastics, etc.

Application fields and characteristics

▼ Plastic Industry

Nano barium sulfate can be used as a filler for plastic ABS raw materials to enhance product gloss, high temperature resistance, UV resistance, strength, stiffness and abrasion resistance, and impact resistance and crack resistance.

The composite material with high strength and high toughness can be obtained by adding nano barium sulfate into the polymer, and the mechanical properties can be obviously improved after the surface modification of barium sulfate.

However, too large amount of modifier will cause multi-layer physical adsorption on the surface of nano-barium sulfate, resulting in serious agglomeration phenomenon, affecting the mechanical properties of composite materials, making it difficult to play the excellent characteristics of inorganic fillers. If the amount of modifier is too small, the interface defects between nano barium sulfate and polymer will increase, resulting in the reduction of the mechanical properties of the composite. The strength and toughness of most polymer composites increase first and then decrease with the increase of the amount of modifier.

In addition to the effect of the amount of surface modifier on the mechanical properties of the composite, the amount of barium sulfate is also an important factor. The strength of nano barium sulfate is large, and it can be added to the composite material to play the role of bearing, so as to produce a certain strengthening effect. However, when the content of nano-barium sulfate is too high, the agglomeration phenomenon in the composite material and the addition of inorganic particles will increase the defects of the matrix and deteriorate the mechanical properties.

▼ Coating industry

It can be used as a filler for paints and coatings to replace high-priced raw materials such as lide powder, titanium dioxide, active silica, etc., and properly control the viscosity of the paint to make the product bright and stable.

Barium sulfate is widely used as an extender pigment in coatings, which can improve the thickness, wear resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance and surface hardness of the coating film. Ultra-fine barium sulfate for coatings has fine particle size and narrow particle size distribution; it is dispersed in resin liquid with transparency; it has good dispersibility in coating base material; it can play the role of dispersing assistant with organic coloring pigment; it can improve physical properties and so on. Because of its low oil absorption and high filling volume, it can reduce the cost of coating for coating.

▼ Paper industry

Barium sulfate has good physical and chemical stability, moderate hardness, high whiteness, and can absorb harmful rays, so it is often used in the paper industry. For example, copy paper is a commonly used office supplies. Because the surface is easy to decolorize, barium sulfate is required to have a high oil absorption value, which can improve the ink absorption of paper. The particle size should be small and uniform, which can make the paper more smooth, thus reducing the wear caused by the machine.

▼ Chemical fiber industry

Viscose fiber has the characteristics of antistatic, easy dyeing, good moisture absorption and easy textile processing, while nano-barium sulfate has good nano-effect. The nano-barium sulfate/regenerated cellulose blend fiber made of the two as raw materials is a new type of composite fiber, which can maintain the unique properties of each component, and can make up for the shortcomings of a single material through the "synergy" between each other, showing the new properties of composite materials.

▼ Rubber industry

Can be used in a large number of rubber products as a filler, reduce costs, improve product hardness, acid and alkali resistance and water resistance, and natural rubber and synthetic rubber has a good reinforcing effect to prevent surface aging.

▼ Ceramic industry

Used for ceramic fabrics and glazes to make the products have high hardness, white as jade and bright luster.

Yuan Lei's Little Knowledge | Performance Requirements and Types of Fillers for Coatings

2024-06-12

Fillers in coatings are usually white or slightly colored pigments with a refractive index less than 1.7. It has the basic physical and chemical properties of pigments used in coatings, but due to its refractive index being similar to the film-forming material, it is transparent in coatings and does not have the coloring and covering power of coloring pigments. It is an indispensable pigment in coatings.
