coal-series kaolin

Coal-based kaolin, also known as coal gangue, is an associated mineral of coal and a valuable resource unique to our country. Although it is available abroad, it is thin and does not have mining value.

01 Resource Status

There are more than 60 countries and regions in the world with kaolin resources, the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Ukraine, China is the world's most important kaolin producing countries, its output accounts for 78% of the world's total output. In 2002, the proven reserves of kaolin in the world were about 32 billion t, of which the United States ranked first with 8.6 billion t, mainly an 800km ore belt in Georgia, with ore content exceeding 70%-90% and abundant resources. The United States is the world's largest kaolin producer, producing 10.8 million t of kaolin in 2002, accounting for 25.60 percent of the world's total output. Among them, calcined kaolin is 2.4 million t, accounting for 68% of the world's total output.

Distribution in our country

China is one of the countries rich in kaolin resources in the world. By the end of 2001, China had 212 kaolin ore producing areas with 143.169 million t of ore reserves, of which 344.97 million t were of grade B + C. There are 97 large and medium-sized mining areas with ore reserves greater than 1 million t, with reserves of 1.3442 million t, accounting for 94% of the total reserves, and 111 small mining areas with reserves of 87.59 million t(B + C grade 42.663 million t), accounting for 6% of the total reserves.

At present, there are more than 700 occurrences of kaolin in China, and the proven reserves of 200 occurrences are 3 billion t, and the occurrences are relatively scattered. Among them, the coal measure kaolin is 1.67 billion t, which is mainly distributed in the Carboniferous-Permian coal measure in the northeast and northwest of China, and exists in the form of gangue, roof and floor or separate ore layer in the coal seam.

According to reports from the coal department, the prospective resources of sedimentary kaolin in the Carboniferous-Jurassic and Tertiary coal-bearing strata in northern China can reach 18 billion t. Thus, the total resources of kaolin in China may exceed 19 billion t, ranking fourth in the world after the United States, the former Soviet Union and the United Kingdom.

Kaolin is widely distributed in China, covering 21 provinces, cities and districts in six major regions of the country, but it is relatively concentrated. Guangdong Province is the province with the largest proven kaolin reserves, with 44.215 million t of ore reserves at the end of 2001, accounting for 30.9 of the country's total. This is followed by Shaanxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Hunan provinces, with reserves accounting for 26.75, 11, 7.7, 7.64 and 3.73 of the total reserves, respectively.

In 1996, the total output of kaolin in China exceeded 2 million t, 3 million t in 2000 and 3.5 million t in 2002. The yield of washing, selecting and calcining kaolin is only about 700000 t.

02 Main Purpose

The reserves of kaolin in the world are not small, but most of them are only suitable for the manufacture of ceramics or fillers. The natural monolithic kaolin resources that are really suitable for paper and paperboard coating pigments are rare. Due to the chemical composition and specific structure of coal series kaolin, it is determined that the research is to use calcination, coupling modification, synthesis and other means to carry out deep processing, mainly used to prepare a variety of high-grade filler, polyaluminium chloride, white carbon black, composite materials, zeolite molecular sieve and FCC catalyst.
