Yuan Lei Small Classroom | Relationship and Difference between Paint, Coating and Resin

The relationship and difference between paint, coating and resin

In life, we often hear the terms paint, paint and resin. Are you confused about the relationship between them. After reading this article, you will understand the difference and meaning of these three nouns.

The relationship between paint and paint, resin can be listed as paint paint> resin. Resin is the smallest unit of the three, as a base material in the formulation of paints and coatings, and coatings include paints in the widest range.

Let's get to know the resin first. Natural resin comes from the resin flowing out of plants, such as rosin, amber, shellac, etc. The appearance of pure resin is generally colorless and transparent. In the natural environment, due to the existence of many impurities, and by the sun and air oxidation, so the color is different, most of the yellow or dark reddish brown. Natural resins were limited in yield and performance, and gradually gave way to industrial synthetic resins. With the development of science and technology, there are more and more types of synthetic resin, and its performance is also constantly improving.

The application of resin is quite extensive, thanks to its good physical and chemical properties, the treated resin has excellent resilience, insulation, water resistance, oil resistance, acid and alkali resistance, pressure resistance, wear resistance, high temperature resistance and so on, from the initial handicrafts, to the back applied to all aspects of human society. For example, there are umbrellas, gloves, clothes, soles and so on in the life of residents. Cars on the road, submarines in the water, planes in the sky, rockets in space... But there are some problems. Some of the resin is liquid and thin like water; some is solid and hard like stone; and some It is semi-solid, soft, like plasticine. As a result, various problems occur during storage or use. In addition, when the resin is used alone, many properties are not going to go up, and the performance is greatly reduced. Therefore, some resins have to be dissolved with liquid organic oil solvents (organic oil solvents and water are similar, both are liquids, and can dissolve certain substances, except that water does not contain C molecules, while organic solvents contain C, most of which are incompatible with water. If mixed together, they will become discontinuous phases, and oil droplets can be seen floating in the water.), According to the need to add some fillers and pigments and other additives to improve tensile strength, bending strength, high temperature and heat resistance, etc., which becomes the paint.

Paint refers to the organic solvent as the medium or high solid, solvent-free oil paint.

Paint contains resin, additives, fillers, solvents, organic solvents are basically toxic. Therefore, in order to protect the safety of the general public, the state has a clear limit on the content of various types of paint solvents.

It was previously processed from vegetable oils and natural resins and was often called paint. With the development of industry, the variety of coatings is increasing, and the quality and performance are constantly improving. Many new coatings no longer contain oil. In this way, the term paint is not accurate enough. Therefore, the various materials used for coating the surface are now collectively referred to as paint, paint is just one of the coatings.

As for paint, it contains four major components of paint, but some solid resins do not need to add organic oil solvent and can be used in powder state. This part of resin without organic oil solvent is called powder coating after mixing other additives and pigments and fillers, which is distinguished from paint.

Simply speaking, coatings can cover solid powder coatings and liquid paints, but paints can only be liquid paints, not equivalent to coatings. The term coatings can cover all kinds of products in the industry.

At present, water-based coatings and powder coatings are widely used in the market, but there are essential differences in chemical properties between water-based coatings and paints, and the properties of products are also very different, so such materials are also called coatings. Therefore, the coating can be divided into three categories: oil (sex) paint, water-based paint, powder coating.

In short, it can be summarized as follows: paint includes paint and powder coating, and resin is only a base material in the formulation of paint and powder coating.

The main components of paint include the following five parts:

(1) Oil: including drying oil and semi-drying oil, is one of the main film-forming substances.

(2) Resin: including natural resin and artificial resin, is also part of the main film-forming material.

(3) Pigments: including coloring pigments, body pigments and anti-rust pigments, the specific varieties are quite numerous and are secondary film-forming substances.

(4) Thinners: including solvents and diluents, used to dissolve the above substances and adjust the consistency, as auxiliary film-forming substances.

(5) Accessories: including driers, curing agents, plasticizers, moisture-proof agents. Also belongs to the auxiliary film-forming material.

Decorative paint composition is mainly composed of three parts:

The main film-forming material: also known as adhesive and fixing agent, is the basis of the composition of the coating.

Secondary film-forming substance: It is also an integral part of the coating film, but it cannot be separated from the main film-forming substance to form the coating film alone.

Auxiliary film-forming substances: including solvents and auxiliary materials. The former such as gasoline, tobacco oil, pine perfume, benzene, ethyl acetate, etc.; the latter such as curing agent, emulsifier, tackifier, drier, wetting agent, dispersant, defoamer, initiator, catalyst, stabilizer, Anti-aging agent, antifreeze, etc.

Fillers in coatings are usually white or slightly colored pigments with a refractive index less than 1.7. It has the basic physical and chemical properties of pigments used in coatings, but due to its refractive index being similar to the film-forming material, it is transparent in coatings and does not have the coloring and covering power of coloring pigments. It is an indispensable pigment in coatings.
